Coastel is our own word to describe our special type of motel accommodation. It has personality, a beachy vibe and is unique to Leigh, which in itself is a truly one-of-a-kind place.
There are five Coastel units: SAIL, SAND, SEA, SPLASH & SUN. They are individually styled around the corresponding vintage beachy theme.
The maximum number would be 16 over all 5 units. This would include 4 guests on sofa beds. A more detailed description of how many each room can sleep can be found on our Accommodation page.
The Coastels have been rebuilt from the bones of the old Leigh Hotel and the room configurations lend themselves best to a two person stay. However, our ‘Sun’ unit which is also wheelchair accessible could accommodate a family of 4. It is slightly larger and has a twin pop up trundler in the curtained-off lounge alcove. Sea and Splash also have sofa beds which could be used for children or extra adult guests.
Infants under two are free. All other children will be charged at half the rate for an additional adult. Water, linen, and clean-up costs are incurred by children as well as adults.

We also have a highchair and portacot set available for hire. Please enquire when making your booking.

No. Two of our units are studios ( all in one room). Three have a separate bedroom and of these, two have a sofa bed in the small lounge area and one (our largest Coastel) has a pop up trundler bed in an alcove separated from the lounge by a curtain.

Yes – up to 30 days beforehand. Our full cancellation policy is outlined in our website here.
Public Holiday weekends are a minimum stay of two or three nights depending on the holiday. All other nights can be single night stay.
We will be opening a Function and Events Centre on site later in 2017. Therefore, we have kept these prime wedding weekend dates on hold until 3 months prior, in order to give first refusal to those using the Function Centre. Once the three month mark has been reached any unreserved Coastels will be released for public booking.
TripAdvisor has no specific category listing for Motels. As our Coastels fall into the smaller boutique accommodation category, in contrast to the bigger Hotel and Motel chains, this is deemed to be the best fit for our particular style of accommodation within their available options even though we do not serve breakfast. Each Coastel has generous cooking facilities and there are delicious breakfast options available next door at Leigh Eats.
You may check in any time after 2pm and in consideration of other guests, before 10pm. Check out is by 10 a.m.
Three days before your arrival, we will text or email you with a 6 digit code which you then enter into the pad on the entry door. This code replaces the need for a key. If you book within three days of your arrival, we will provide your door code with your booking confirmation.
We require guests to pay in full before their stay so there is no need to check in or out.[
Yes. We have provided a range of basic cooking equipment and crockery. Each unit has a microwave and small hobs. Salt and pepper and cooking oil provided – You need to bring the rest. We ask that guests refrain from cooking extra spicy and fragrant food for obvious reasons.
Smoking is not allowed in or around the Coastels – including the outside deck.
Each Coastel has a designated carpark immediately outside the entry door.
Yes. Talk to us prior to your arrival to arrange this.
Sorry No. We don’t allow pets in the Leigh Coastels. However, well behaved pets will be welcome to join their owners on holiday at our short stay Motorhome and Caravan Park on site.
We are rebuilding the whole site from the bones of the old abandoned Leigh Hotel. You can follow our progress on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/leighcentral. Eventually in addition to the Coastels and Motorhome Park, the site will include a Function Centre with a commercial kitchen and a Sunday market. We hope construction will be completed by 2018.
Like many beach communities in New Zealand, Leigh does not have a municipal water or sewerage supply.

We rely entirely on rain and bore water for our needs and our sewerage is a sceptic tank system. We have gone to huge efforts to install a brand new state-of-the art eco system to meet our needs. However, we do ask guests to co-operate with us in keeping our system working well. This means conserving water where you can and being mindful of our requests to look after the loo!

Leigh Central is located right in the heart of Leigh village so you can walk less than a minute to NZ’s best fish and chips next door at Leigh Eats, they also have great pies, baking, coffee and takeout meals. Leigh Bar around the corner has good pub grub, and the Leigh Sawmill Café up the road is a legend for food, beer and great times. The local dairy (store) has basic pantry items should you wish to dine in.
